I am not exploring the mountain of data on climate change. I would rather speak to the hysteria that surrounds the movement. Full disclosure, I do believe that some form of climate change is taking place. We have not been good stewards of our planet and there is a price to be paid for complacency. Yet, the hysteria associated with this topic is overwhelming. Some young people are not old enough to understand the hysteria created by the Y2K bug. Here is an article dated 12 days after Y2K: https://www.computerworld.com.au/article/89791/y2k_all_hoax_/.
The tragedy of over reaction is most people will dismiss it all together. When hyperbole is used i.e. “The world will end in 12 years if we do not address the problem” the discussion is cheapened. You take a worthy subject and make it a punchline at a cocktail party. The latest installment is the exploitation of a young girl from Australia, Greta Thunberg. I am not condemning the young lady for her stand. I actually, rather admire her to some degree. The performance given appears to be scripted from someone behind the scenes. This form of propaganda takes climate change and puts it on par with an episode of the Kardashians. My hope is that I am wrong with my assumption. Climate change has been an issue since the early 1970’s but has evolved as the flavor of the week in 2018-2019. Let’s partner and come up with solutions that can actually work. If we support ludicrous proposals proposed from our government a weather apocalypse would be the least of our worries.
Climate change is a serious subject that needs to be addressed. Equally worthy causes are, human trafficking, the worldwide opioid crisis and diminishing fresh water supplies in the world. Acting irrational will get the 5 minutes of fame some are seeking, but will not persuade most people that have witnessed propoganda stunts. Quit acting irrational and present solutions that will not bankrupt the country. Quit parading young children to a microphone for overblown performances. And last but not least quit using our children as props for your causes. If the cause is justified, the evidence presented will be the strongest argument. Let’s take a step back, breathe deeply and tackle these problems with rational, not another drama performance.
