I have read the Bible through several times. I do not know what your belief system is but that is not the purpose of this post. In the story of the trial of Jesus, Pilate asks him one of the most intriguing questions. Jesus states “I tell you the truth” which invokes a question from Pilate where he asks “What is truth?”. This is a question you could pursue your entire life. In today’s society “truth” is becoming harder to determine.
Video and Audio is no longer a good method to determine what happened in an event. The ability to edit these two medias reminds me of a quote my Dad told me many years ago, “Believe nothing of what you hear, and very little of what you see”. Every society attempts to influence its people by adjusting what they see, hear and read. I witness people arguing everyday about subjects they know very little about. I have no idea what has taken place in politics and neither do you. Our society has become one big opinion editorial, and before you start feeling smug, we are the biggest advocates to false news. I actually remember a time when this was called gossip?
Many people today appear to be unhappy. We have more people on anti-depressants today than ever, and the stress levels keeps going up. Mark Twain once said “The two most important days in your life are: “The day you are born”, and number two is “The day you find out why?” Do you believe you are changing people’s minds with posts on Social Media? Is the debate that becomes heated at work serving any purpose? Maybe in the pursuit of truth, listening is our greatest asset. I have asked people of age, over the years if they think at 40 like they did at the age of 20? Most laugh and tell me they do not, I then ask them which one was correct? The point being we are flawed in our thinking at any age. Truth is not an opinion, it stands on it’s own and does not require your endorsement to exist. In some instances we might be chasing the wind in the pursuit of truth.
The point of this post about truth is simple in nature. Enter a discussion willing to have your mind changed. A discussion in trying to find the truth is not a football game, in some cases both participants in the discussion are seeking an answer but neither person wants to admit they only have part of the facts and lots of opinion. Focus on the things that matter in life. Winning isn’t making someone look foolish, it ends a conversation before it ever begins. What is truth? The method in finding it is as important as the answer itself.
Very true!
